Sassicaia has arguably become Italy's flagship wine in less than fifty years, spearheading a new oenological movement: the Supertuscans. This new edition tells the story of how the wine came about almost by chance, retracing the roots of the winemaker's family and Mario Incisa's efforts to change local habits to create an Italian equivalent of a Bordeaux First Growth. The book is the ultimate source on Sassicaia: author Marco Fini, has interviewed the major players multiple times over a thirty-year span. Along with the history of Sassicaia, the book also explores the prize-winning thoroughbred racehorses that train at the estate and the Bolgheri Bird Sanctuary, the first in Italy. With its rolling hills, cypress-lined avenues, and vineyards, the breathtaking beauty of the Tuscan coast is shown in its best light in all seasons by photographer Etienne Hunyady.
ETIENNE HUNYADY, born in Lausanne in 1968, spent his childhood in Italy but went to college in the USA to study literature and art. He began working over twenty years ago in New York. He has lived in Tuscany since 1998, where he photographs interiors, landscapes, and portraits for magazines, hotels, and wine producers. His work has appeared in magazines in Europe and the USA, and he has published three books, one of them with teNeues: Luxury Houses Toscana.
MARCO FINI, (Florence 1934 - Lido di Camaiore 2017), was a journalist who worked with Italian weeklies Panorama and Epoca. He was active since the 1960s and co-wrote TV programs including La Forza della Democrazia and L'Italia del boom for RAI 2 with Corrado Stajano. He published numerous essays including Gli americani in Italia (Feltrinelli).
